Julian Assange is the first ever digital revolutionary!

A long overdue…

First, my sincere apologies for not writing about him earlier…yes Julian Assange the “hacktivist”, as we all know is the most powerful man of the year…Did TIME made a mistake in choosing its person of the year? In all probability yes.

Why did I not write about him earlier? Because, I was not sure about the entire mass leaking phenomenon. I was a little caught up doing my research about this man and therefore form an unbiased opinion. But so many of my friends have been insisting about him (which includes my all-knowing father)…

I now believe that he is the first ever digital revolutionary. While on one side, the entire hacking process is based on a punishable offence…but on the other side…we must value the fact that he stole many documents with a noble cause in mind. He has shown us what the internet is supposed to be – transparent. There is nothing called an impenetrable fortress in the digital world. We all know that on the internet, we are much more honest than what we are in real life. Any powerful government is founded on the simple idea of concealment. The more we know, the more powerful and therefore more rebellious we become. The more busy people are watching soap operas on TV, the more powerful the elites (who run the country) become…Anyways…

He has been successful in one aspect where even Mark Zuckerberg has failed. While facebook still is a strictly online prcoess, Wikileaks is not. The digital and the real lives overlapped for the first time in the history of the internet, in the true sense of the word that is. We now understand that an unknown computer genius can actually topple multiple governments just by leaking a few unsavory truths. Facebook is yet to become real from that perspective.

By and large, I strongly feel that whatever sexual charges he is facing now, has got nothing to do with his work. Those charges are so inconsequential, so trivial vis-a-vis his “hacktivism”. He and his gang have threatened the US government with some serious mass leaking, in case something happens to him. He says that he has shown us just the tip…much of it is still under water! I believe no one can do any harm to him….they will surely try to buy him though….Does he have a price? Only time can tell…

For everything mentioned above, I choose this James Bond of Journalism, this Che of the modern world, as the first ever digital revolutionary.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays :)
