Corruption, Chaos & Commonwealth !

Hi there!

There is an emergency in the middle of the week. Commonwealth games, yes…

Is it a good idea to criticize my own country, my current city, my own people, my home? – NO for sure. I have been very hesitant about this post since last night. But then I realized that – all these posts are by an impartial observer who just wants to make you laugh. Art and honesty always go hand in hand – don’t they?

Anyways, let’s come to the point. India (New Delhi that is) is hosting Commonwealth Games in a few more days. As always the omnipresent corruption here has taken its toll and the organizing body has been a total failure so far – roof of stadiums collapsing, there is water logging in and around the stadiums, footbridge not able to withstand unprecedented rains and therefore collapsing, balloons bursting, the anthem not being upto the mark etc etc. Here are the twin corrupt pillars of the Games…

Let’s call the pillar on the left hand side – our Gr8 Granny and the one on the right – the Bearded Bandit (I hate politics and am not very conversant with the names as you can understand). I am not considering the sidekicks here. When the footbridge (connecting the village for the athletes to the stadium)collapsed two days back, Gr8 Granny said – it was only for the pedestrians of the city and they can afford to die. You see, we have so many people here. Nothing happens when a few go missing! Our Bearded Bandit promised that everything is in place as far as the Great Game is concerned and the event will be a memorable one – better than the one at Beijing! And I dunno what to say about that…

Operation Evacuation has been in full swing since the last one month. The Government is providing free train trips to all the people without a valid photo id, to their native places inside the country! All the beggars have been given strict orders to go to hell! All the ugly buses etc quickly disappearing everyday :)

We are a superpower these days – so the newspapers say. Even though, 77% of the Indians earn less than Rs. 500 ( US $ 10) per month, only 20% dare enter a shopping mall, more than 30% of the people are still illiterate…

It saddens me to bring all these ugly truths to everyone’s notice. 64 years of independence! What exactly is happening? Do we need to go through fire and bleed ourselves to truly understand the meaning of being a free country? A civil war may be is the answer!

Jai Hind?

p.s. the best comment so far from facebook – the Bearded Bandit wanted to hang himself yesterday, but the ceiling collapsed 😉
